The majority of our teams use a flat scale (1 point per shift) as opposed to a weighted scale (5 point scale, where some shifts are worth more than others).
The Volunteering Points Summary report totals shifts worked and points earned per parent and groups this by family, so you can easily see who has met either threshold at the end of your season. So, teams can track shifts worked from this report without using points.
Flat Scale
Meet jobs, regardless of type/difficulty, are assigned 1 point per shift, so that a half-meet shift (i.e. Setup, Check-in, AM Timer, etc.) earns 1 point, and a whole-meet shift earns 2 points (i.e. Tent Parent, Volunteer coordinator, etc.). So at the end of a season, most families should have completed and equal number shifts and points.

Weighted Scale
Teams might use this system if they consider some jobs to be worth more points than others, or so they can award more points for harder to fill jobs, like Stroke Judge or Trash Pickup, or Tent Parent for younger age groups.
