Website Metrics with Google Analytics 4
Add Google Analytics to your team site to track page views, visitors, and much more.
➧ Creating your Google Analytics account
You can sign up for a free account at https://analytics.google.com.
➧ Finding the "Measurement ID" in Google Analytics to add to your Team Site
After creating your Google Analytics account, find your "Measurement ID" and enter it into the "Google Analytics Measurement ID" field on the Advanced tab of your team's Website > Site Settings.
Step 1 ➞ Visit "Configure" in the left navigation
Step 2 ➞ Click ‘Go to Admin’ when prompted
Step 3 ➞ Click on "Data Streams"
Step 4 ➞ Select your data stream
Step 5 ➞ Press "Copy"
Step 6 ➞ Paste this value into the "Google Analytics Measurement ID" field on the Advanced tab of your team's Website > Site Settings. (Don't forget the "G-" or you will receive a validation error)
» Tip: For expected results, only use the "Google Analytics Measurement ID" field provided. Do not copy/paste the GA4 javascript code block into the "Additional Header/Footer Content" fields on the page.
» Note: It may take up to 48 hours for banners to update in the admin panel, but data should be available almost immediately from the home page.
Migrating from GA3 (Universal Analytics) to GA4
» Note: Google Analytics 4 is replacing Universal Analytics (GA3). On July 1, 2023, your Universal Analytics properties will stop collecting data and only GA4 properties will collect data from this point forward. SwimTopia will remove GA3 support after this date.
If your team is currently using GA3 on your team site, the primary change you will need to make is the transition from a Google Analytics 'Tracking ID' to a "Measurement ID."
This requires that you migrate your GA3 account to version 4, then locate and enter your "Measurement ID" into the "Google Analytics Measurement ID" field on the Advanced tab of your team's Website > Site Settings.
Google has provided documentation for how to migrate your account from GA3 to GA4. ➞ See the Google Analytics Migration Guide for details and then follow the steps above to find and enter your Measurement ID into your team site.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) with Google Search Central
Register your SwimTopia site with Google's Search Central to help you see your site as Google sees it, and alert you to any issues that may affect the way your site ranks in the page results. You can also see when Google last crawled your site.
To set up Webmaster Tools, You will enter the site Verification HTML tag into Google Search Central Site Verification Code field in the Advanced tab of your team's Website settings.
Select the "HTML Tag" method under "Alternate Methods" of authentication.
Copy the complete <meta> tag value into the Google Search Central Site Verification Code field.
Once your site is verified through Google, within 24 hours you will see data.
Google Search Results Delay
Changes can sometimes take weeks to take effect. This is completely driven by Google and out of our control as Google crawls a site and it builds history and legitimacy for a website over time.
There are some things you can do to help speed up the process:
➧ Create a Google Search Central Account
The number one recommendation is to create a Google Search Central account by going here - https://developers.google.com/search. This will allow you to request crawling updates from Google and see reports on any issue Google sees with your account.
➧ Spell out Your Team Name
Other things that can help are using the fully spelled-out version of the team name as often as possible on your site and using Alt tags on photos.
➧ Use Backlinks on Social Media Sites Etc.
Backlinks also help, so any other sites you can post the team website link on (league site, Facebook, etc.)
➧ Use "Alternative text" in Image Snippets
When you add the "image" snippet it gives you a place to enter "Alternative text" - Google looks for that text to match other things on your page you are trying to rank for. So one thing to do would be to edit the current photo on the homepage and add the full team name in the alt text box as shown:
Do some (or all) of these changes, and give it about 2-3 weeks or so, and Google should update once again to allow a search for the team name to bring up the SwimTopia site.
